The Raspberry Berets of Root River stems off a group called the Red Hat Society. The According to the website, “Red Hat Society has become the international society dedicated to reshaping the way women are viewed in today's culture. RHS supports and encourages women to pursue fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment of lifelong dreams and fitness.”

A woman in California started the Red Hat Society in 2000 when a good friend of hers was upset about turning 50, said Carie Weston, Queen of Vice and founding member. The woman saw a poem When I am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple. She went out and got her friend a red hat. That friend then gave a red hat to another one and so on.
