Road tripping? Watch Out For These Work Zones in Southeast Wisconsin

The Department of Transportation has released its construction summary for the weekend. Check it out and see if your drive will be free and clear, or if you need to plan for delays.

The Department of Transportation has announced road closures through the weekend in Southeast Wisconsin. Here's a summary of work on area Interstates, as well as a look at construction around the EAA event in Oshkosh.

Ozaukee County

Highland Road Bridge over Interstate 43 is receiving a new bridge deck. The beam guard adjacent to the bridge will also be replaced.

Highland Road over I-43 will be closed to traffic completely from June 13 to August 19. A detour route will be in place, utilizing N. Port Washington Road (County W), Pioneer Road (County C) and N. Lakeshore Drive. Single-lane closures will take place occasionally on I-43 during off-peak hours (8 p.m. to 5 a.m.).

I-43 from US 12 to WIS 83

Approach work will be finished on the northbound and southbound I-43 structures, from Hodunk Road to Plank Road.  Stage switch for the northbound and southbound I-43 structures from Hodunk Road to Plank Road on July 28 southbound and July 29 northbound. Pour expansion joints on the I-43 Structures at northbound and southbound over WIS 20 and WIS 120 on July 27 and finish deck preparation type I and type II by the end of next week. 

I-43 is reduced by one lane. County D over I-43 is detoured.

Waukesha County 

I-94 at the County P Interchange

The existing half diamond interchange will be reconstructed to a full diamond.  New bridges and retaining walls will be constructed on I-94. County P will be expanded to a four- lane urban section at the interchange. The County DR frontage roads will be relocated. Four roundabouts will be constructed at the interchange.

I-94 traffic will be switched to one side with crossovers.  Two lanes in each direction will be maintained. County P and County DR will be closed and detoured. Entrance and exit ramps will be closed depending on the stage of construction. 

EAA Airventure Traffic Info

There is extensive reconstruction of US 41, the main route through Winnebago County into Oshkosh. Motorists are encouraged to be particularly cautious in the following areas, according to the DOT:

  • Construction continues along 13 miles of US 41 in Winnebago County with 11-foot-wide lanes. Shoulders are reduced to one-foot widths and lined with concrete barriers. Speed limits in the work zones are reduced to 55 mph and are strictly enforced.
  • The US 41 and US 45 interchange in Oshkosh is closed for reconstruction. The detour for US 45 is from US 41 onto WIS 76 to US 10 and then to US 45.
  • The 9th Avenue interchange in Oshkosh has just re-opened except for the southbound ramps.
