Greendale Health Department Says Keep Cool and Safe

The Greendale Health Department gives tips to beat the extreme heat.

In hot weather like this everyone probably wants stay at home in air conditioning. Unfortunately not everyone has that option. Some people work outdoors and others might not be able to afford air conditioning.

According to Today’s TMJ4’s forecast, the Milwaukee area is expecting highs approaching 93 degrees today with a heat index breaking 100.

A heat advisory is in effect for Milwaukee County and other area counties until 10 p.m. Monday evening, , one issued when air quality reaches or is expected to reach the unhealthy level for people in sensitive groups including children, elderly people, people with respiratory and cardiac problems or anyone engaged in strenuous outdoor activities. In addition, because of the unstable atmosphere, there has now been a severe thunderstorm watch issued for Milwaukee and seven other counties until 3 p.m. this afternoon.

  • Take frequent showers.
  • Drink a lot of water. Try to stay away from caffeine because it's dehydrating.
  • Wear light weight and light colored clothing.
  • Check up on your neighbors who are elderly.

According to Nurse Olga Gonzalez, the Greendale Health Department has "a list of individuals that are home-bound and make calls to them to see how they are doing."

People who are out of town can call the health department and have them check on their family members, such the elderly.
