Extreme Cold Could Close Schools

There is a wind chill advisory in effect until noon Friday, due to the extreme cold—with wind chill as low as -25. Dress warm and don't stay out too long.

The National Weather Service has instituted a wind chill advisory that is in effect until noon Friday, due to arctic weather sliding into the area.

The combination of morning temperatures in the single digits and the brisk west wind will push wind chill readings to between 15 and 25 degrees below zero, according to the NWS advisory.

Frost bite and hypothermia could occur if precautions are not taken when you are outdoors.

This is the kind of cold that sometimes leads to school and business closings. Check out the closings list from WISN12 above, or click here for WISN closings and here for the TMJ4 closings.

As of 7:20 a.m., there was one Milwaukee County closing listed, for Right Step and there was an alert for parents at Early View Academy of Excellence for no transportation. If you learn of anything, please add it in the comments section. We'll update this article as more becomes available.

I think they close schools for every little thing these days. Most kids are driven, or drive themselves. If they take the bus, so they have to stand on a cold bus top, they're still getting a ride to school. At least they don't have to walk. Kids are so pampered today that they won't be able to handle anything later on when they're adults.

Considering that only 4 schools are on the closed list, it seems that they really don't 'close schools for every little thing these days'...

I spent a couple hours walking around outside today without any problems except for the ice everywhere. The only time I ever suffered frostbite was standing around waiting too long for a bus. It's easy to stay warm enough if you keep moving.
