Abortions Decrease Thanks to Informed Consent

The number of abortions taking place in Wisconsin continues to drop, thanks in large part to Wisconsin’s strong informed consent law.  The Department of Health published the annual report revealing the number of abortions decreased to 6,927 during 2012.  This marks a 4.4% decrease in the number of abortions from 2011 to 2012.   Wisconsin continues a steady decline in the number of abortions over the past few decades, down from over 17,000 at the time the continuous reporting system began.

Wisconsin’s robust informed consent law ensures pregnant women are fully informed about the nature of their pregnancy and options available to them.   It provides that the decision is made in knowledgeable and voluntary manner.

Sonya’s Law, signed into law this summer took important steps to further strengthen Wisconsin’s informed consent law.  The law ensures that readily available ultrasound technology is provided to all women considering an abortion.  The law ensures that women considering the serious decision have access to the best information available concerning their pregnancy and access to medical care in a medical emergency.
