What's Cooking at National Bakery

Cold and snow doesn't stop spring from coming to the bakery cases at Greendale's National Bakery; what's hot for the season?

Despite dozens of choices among the bakery items in National Bakery and Deli's cases, there are always favorites, and generally what's selling like, well, hotcakes, is dependent on the date on the calendar.

While it is Lent, bakery still marches out the door, and by and large it's the traditional items that do the best, like hot cross buns.

"As Easter gets closer, we're seeing a lot of the butter lambs and blessing breads sell very well," said employees Donna and Victoria. The breads are used in baskets that are made up to be blessed in church, a tradition that goes back centuries.

In the meantime, St. Patrick's Day favorites like corned beef and rye bread are a popular target of customers these days.Β

What sells is definitely what's familiar, Donna explained, and it's the tradition that customers look for to carry forward with their families, year in and year out.
