Video: Groundbreaking for Senior Housing Complex

On Friday Village officials and project members gathered at a ceremonial groundbreaking for the senior housing complex behind Southridge Mall.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the senior housing complex was on Friday at about 9 a.m.

Construction started a couple of weeks ago on the $17 million project of the  90-unit senior housing complex along the South 76th Street Corridor, adjacent to Southridge Mall. The development is part of the village’s first tax incremental financing (TIF) district.

The construction is part of a larger plan for the area. The village also intends to create a four-way intersection near the mall along Northway that will connect with Southridge Mall's south entrance. Plans will call for redeveloping the former Blood Center property adjacent to the proposed development.

Other future development in the village is the $52 million dollar redevelopment of Southridge Mall as part of a second TIF district and a new proposed Wal-Mart on 76th Street at the old U.S. Bowling Congress.
