Loomis Road Reconstruction on WisDOT's Radar

The stretch from 51st Street just north of Greendale nearly to 27th Street is slated for improvements in 2020, or earlier.

While City of Greenfield officials lobby the county to reconstruct a section of Layton Avenue sooner rather than later, another state-owned highway is getting a preliminary look by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

A 2.6-mile segment of Loomis Road, or WIS 36, from just north of Greendale at South 51st Street to West Fardale Avenue in Milwaukee is in the preliminary design phase for reconstruction, according to WisDot.

Pavement and curb and gutters will be replaced and missing sidewalks will be added on both sides of the roadway.

Intersection improvements would include lengthening turn lanes and traffic signal upgrades designed to improve traffic flow. In addition, the current parking lane is expected to be converted to a bicycle/auxiliary lane.

Improvements to utilities include storm sewer and street lighting upgrades. Some right-of-way acquisition is expected to be required for the intersection improvements and temporary easements are anticipated for sidewalk construction.

In addition, the Loomis Road bridge over Interstate 894/43 would be rehabilitated. The area could see more traffic in the coming years as the city tries to develop a large chunk of land just off the interstate.

It is on this stretch of road that a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle last October.

Construction is scheduled for 2020 but could begin as early as 2017 if funding is available.

WisDOT will hold a public information meeting from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the Greenfield Public Library’s Community Room, 5310 W. Layton Ave.
