Caesar's Pet Going Out of Business

The store will close before Dec. 1.

After more than three years of being in business is going out of business.

The pet supply store located in downtown Greendale was a fixture in the Village for dog owners, but the economy caught with up the small business.

"The economy got us," Owner Gary Conley said. "We’ve got hundreds and hundreds of wonderful loyal and generous customers that have helped us since the beginning, but the economy just slammed us in the face and just brought us to a screeching halt."

The entire store is at least 50% off and some items at 75% off. All dog clothing is $5 a piece.

The store housed hundreds of gifts for pets and their owners including fresh bakery, animal clothing and jewelry, toys and accessories.

Beyond the wide range of assorted animal products, the store is known for its pet-friendly atmosphere. Four-legged customers were always more than welcome to come along with their owners on their visits. A staffed photographer, Laura Gorzek, was known for her ability to maneuver fickle pets and children into the perfect pose for portraits. There was also a talented dog groomer.

Caesar's Pet was not only known for its items and services, but also their special events. The shop hosted dog birthday parties, pet fashion and dance shows and participated in the Village Parades.

Conley is sad to be leaving. He said he held on as long as he could.

"The question is can you stick it out till the end until the economy gets better, people go back to work and go shopping?" said Conley about small business similar to his shop. "Discounters like the Wal-Marts of the world are probably thriving through this recession because people are not spending money that they don’t have to. There is no disposable income. The money that they are earning is going to their bills, their mortgage, their food, shelter, the necessaities.

"But when it comes to buying something cute like a knick knack for the kitchen or a wall hanging they are not spending money on that because it’s not necessary."

Conley enjoyed his time in Greendale and will miss everyone.

"Greendale has been absolutely incredible," he said. "The best people in the world are right here. We’re going to miss them terribly. I’d stay forever if I could."
