What Did Your Father Teach You?

Having grown up on a farm in Ohio, my dad taught us to work hard. And yeah, just about everyone says that... but we were expected to sweat.

We baled hay even on the hottest days in the summer, hauled water from the house to the barn during the middle of winter when the pipes froze in the barn. We learned how to mix cement, care for the animals on the farm and we were constantly building things. I also learned how to drive a 1942 Case tractor at 11-years-old. I could parallel park a manure spreader on the back of that Case tractor in the field by the time I was 16. And I had to learn how to change the tires on the car before I could even think about getting my driver's license.

But I think one of the biggest things my dad taught me -- having grown up in the 1970s -- was that my independence and career choices were mine to make and my education was important because it was something that could never be taken away from me.

What did your father teach you? We asked people around Greendale that very question. See how they responded, and add a comment with tributes to your own father.
