Summer Reading Kick-off

A large crowd gathered at the Greendale Public Library for the start of the summer reading program.

The line of families waiting to sign-up for the summer reading program stretched to the end of the block, but in the end the wait was worth it. Ice cream sundaes and one of the Milwaukee Brewer's racing sausages were waiting for them at the front of the line.Β

The Greendale Public Library has held a summer reading program since it was founded in 1975.Β  This year's program is called "" and focuses on travels and stories from around the globe. The free program, which kicked-off today, June 13,Β is open to kids from ages 0-12.

Jennie McNaughton, Youth Service Librarian, says that after students sign-up, they track the number of books or minutes spent reading, for which they earn tickets that can be entered into a drawing for prizes. TheΒ prizes include coupon booklets, books, toys and games.

Connor Loeffler, 10, of Greendale participated in the library's reading program last summer and was eager to sign up again this year.

"It's fun because you have a chance to win all these cool prizes," said Loeffler, to which his mom, Linda, chimed in, "Since he knows Mom is going to make him read this summer anyway!"
