Stop Bugging Me! Recapping Some Greendale News

It has been a slow week in the Village, but something is still bugging the Village Grandma. It is the Emerald Ash Borer.

Hello again Greendale,

Not much news in our Village this week. I'll share what I know.

It appears that the restaurant carolers have actually taken root in the ground and may be a permanent fixture. If so, they should really be decorated appropriately for the seasons. A bouquet of shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day, colored eggs for Easter and maybe put the lady in a maternity dress for Mother's Day. Just thinking.

Special alert! If you bring in firewood from faraway places, be sure that there are no Emerald ash borers clinging to the logs. In fact, if you transport firewood from some other Wisconsin counties, the result could be a hefty $1,000 fine. Now, I can’t tell you what an Emerald Ash Borer looks like but I presume it is bright green and bug-like. Best to gather your logs closer to home to be on the safe side. I thought maybe one could take an axe to a fallen tree in Canterbury Woods but apparently that would be frowned upon.

St. Al's school has garnered a $30,000 grant for a tech ed. program, so a big hurrah to them.

Our high school “keglers’ went to the state tournament again this year. Fingers crossed for a good result there. For those who don't speak German a "kegler" is a bowler.

The tenth annual Empty Bowls program put on by high school students will be held March 19th.The students actually make the bowls and prepare the meal. Event proceeds will be donated to the Hunger Task of Milwaukee. So, let's all share a bowl of soup for charity.

Another annual event that is not to be missed is the “Come Fly With Me” gala held at the GHS on March 26. It is a lovely way to enjoy a nice meal and music by the High School orchestra. I really enjoyed it last year. The only drawback for me was finding appropriate formal attire. I can't remember the last time I wore anything formal. At my advanced age and questionable measurements it was a bit difficult to find anything.  Plus, I guess there's a rule that all clothing for ladies must be at least 50% spandex. So, it is rather like putting on a wet suit.

Last year, I settled on a roomy black number with some white satin trim. True, it did look a bit like a shroud but no one else seemed to notice.

The high school will be conducting driver education classes this summer. This means you must be extra alert on the roads for the new licensees. On a bright note, if one of the new drivers is a relative, he or she will be only too eager to do even the smallest chore — if it involves a car. I remember asking my grandson to take my trashcans to the street and he happily drove them the 20 feet down my driveway.

I'm sure you've noticed that it stays light later and the sun comes up earlier every day. Spring is for sure on the way. I can't wait for the first robin. The little birdies are flitting about my front window and planning where to build their little nests. Gump and Nasferatu are mesmerized. I never knew that cats drooled.

Well must run. Hopefully next week will be busier.
