Really Good Greendale Gossip

This week the Village Grandma received her property tax assessment, checked out the new cookie store and reports on the "The Great Greendale Calendar War".

Hello Greendale,

It gets really hard to ferret out any really good Greendale gossip when you can only be outside for a few minutes at a time due to the horrendous heat and humidity. Nevertheless, I did uncover a few newsy items.

If you have checked your mailbox recently, you are already aware that the Village’s new property assessments are out. If you have a question about the numbers, there will be several days in August for you to ask questions about your assessment. Check out the Village’s website for more information.

Since the value of my little cottage dropped considerably, I made a survey of my house to see if maybe a part of it had disintegrated. Alas, it seems to be entirely intact. It seems the Village also didn’t take into account my new chicken coop. I decidedly think that would be considered an “improvement” to my property.

Here’s the puzzling part: Despite the devaluation, I hear my property tax bill will likely remain about the same.

Here is the first official sign that fall is just around the corner, summer school has come to a close and school registration for the 2011-12 school year gets rolling in a matter of days.

At long last there will be no long drive to buy your Big Mac or Kid's meal. Not to worry though. The fat that was removed by the deletion of French fries from the Happy Meal will be replaced with a buttery caramel dip for the apple slices and more fiber will be added to the Cheeseburgers by including a second lettuce leaf.

I hear that the Village Board will soon vote on the selling over $15 million in bonds for the funding of the Southridge renovations.

Since we're on the subject of Southridge, you should know that the police department is reminding us to drive safely and stay alert while circumnavigating the various ins and outs of the areas around the mall. I couldn't agree more. One can get easily distracted by the all the workers and equipment. I have noticed my own eyes darting hither and yon while making my weekly Sendik’s run.

A while back I told you about the calendar the Not to be outdone, the Greendale Historical Society has released their 2012 calendar. To be fair, the Historical Society has been putting out calendars for a few years now. But, I still like to call it “The Great Greendale Calendar War”. All these calendars are super news for those of us with memory deficits and require a calendar on every wall in the house. I always say, “One can never have too many calendars”.

Rumor has it that a restaurant chain is getting ready to take over the old Leath's Furniture building on 76th Street. So, let's all start praying for a nice upscale eatery … an establishment that will compliment the Wal-Mart soon to be built across the street. A recent Facebook poll showed that resident’s top choices for new Southridge restaurants are a P.F. Chang’s, Maggiano’s Little Italy and The Cheesecake Factory. Keep you fingers crossed or we might end up with a Golden Corral, Ponderosa Steak House or Cracker Barrel.

I was driving down Broad Street the other day and noticed a Grand Opening sign for the new cookie store, Sugar and Flour. Anything with the word “cookie” in it draws me in like a magnet. So, my daughter and I went in to see what they had to offer. Everything looked yummy and is very cleverly decorated.  We finally decided on a bag of petite cookies — they were about the size of a 50-cent piece — with a watermelon slice decoration. I had to try just one to see if they're also tasty. Quite by accident, I ate two more. So, I would say they are definitely tasty. They would be perfect for impressing guests at your next soiree.

I guess my cats are fine. I haven't seen Gump yet this week, but his food dish is empty every morning.

Until next week.
