Mowers, Music and Other Village Sounds

This week the Village Grandma is thinking about Racing Sausages, more Wal-Mart meetings and concerts at the Gazebo.

Hello fellow Greendalers,

Our little village is getting its annual beauty treatment. Flowers are being planted everywhere and the weather is perfect for growing. I imagine your “super-tall” corn plant is shooting up as much as mine is. Actually, my corn plant reminds me of that old fairy tale, “Jack and the Beanstalk". I'm sure you all are having mucho of the same success.

Exciting news from . As part of their annual Olympic Day, Principal Christian Pleister challenged the famous Racing Klement’s Racing Sausages to a race. Of course, all the money was on the Sausages — what with all their racing experience — but those who put their money on the principal went away with a potful of cash. So, congratulations to the fleet-footed educator. He clearly earned his 15-minutes of fame.

At the the student newspaper writers met with a visiting Iraqi journalists. Quite an experience I should imagine. Also at the High School the National Honor society announced that they had raised $2,000 which they donated to the Autism Society.

You should know that Greendale is still searching for a new police chief.

On Tuesday, our Board of Trustees will be ironing out many questions regarding rezoning vis-a-vis the proposed Wal-Mart and the unoccupied building that used to house the old Leath furniture store. They will also be discussing a possible service agreement between Milwaukee and Greendale regarding emergency medical services. I guess this agreement would improve the speed in which emergency calls would be handled.

Summer is officially days away. I think we all know what that means ... the Saturday and Sunday night concerts at the Gazebo are right around the corner.

This year there will be a tribute to Neil Diamond and also to the Beatles. The first concert next Saturday will be a "Swing-O-Matic”. A nice way to enjoy village atmosphere on a warm summer night. You can see out the schedule on the

Since there was not a lot going on this week, I thought I would sit out on my original Greendale porch and enjoy the ambience of the village. I was just a minute of two into my reverie when one of the neighbors began to mow his lawn. Now, usually the distant hum of a lawnmower on a summer day is a pleasing noise. But, this neighbor has apparently updated his mower by installing an airplane engine. Since it only takes 20 minutes or so to complete his lawn and even though my little porch was shaking, I decided to wait it out. I was almost back into a zen state when a different neighbor had decided to have her carpets cleaned! Well, the roar of the vacuum — as it inhaled the dirt and grime of the past year — was way too much for me. So, I went back in the house to commune with my cats.

No luck there either. Both of them were mesmerized by a large black ant which they batted back and forth rather like a living tennis ball.

Now, I think it's my responsibility to maintain both the physical and emotional health of Gump and Nosferatu. Therefore, when I read in the New York Times that male cats often become depressed and secretive after they have had their neutering surgery, I decided that I must search for something that would bring back Gump's  sparkling pre-surgery personality.

Imagine my delight when in same article there was a business listed that sells artificial man parts for cats. I can't exactly visualize how they attach but I'm sure that it will be worth it to give it a try. I will let you know the results.

Well, like I said, not much going on in the village this week. Must run anyway. I have to mix up a dose of my special potion to put on my corn stalk and as you can imagine it takes a while to collect the main ingredient from the chicken coop.
