From Battle to Bowling: Local WWII Veterans Stay Active

Some local war vets stay busy and in touch with one another by bowling.

Classc Lanes in Greenfield is the place to be this Veteran's Day if you're part of the '50 Plus Senior League.'

The group of men and women meet each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the bowling alley, located at 5404 W. Layton Avenue, to stay active and in touch with other like-minded seniors.

Wednesday November 9 was not just the usual round of strikes and spares for the group however. League President Carie Weston surprised some of the men by recognizing their military service in honor of this week's Veteran's Day holiday.

Weston called each of the men up to the front of the bowling hall to give them a special treat and some much-deserved recognition as World War II veterans.

All of the men are in their eighties and nineties and many of them have been bowling on the league for the past fifteen years. Some of the men even meet at the bowling alley a second time per week for a little extra competition.

About half the men have participated in the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight program, which takes WWII veterans and terminally ill vets from other wars to see the memorials in Washington, D.C.

Some of the bowlers even wore the shirts and jackets they received on the Washington trip, which read "Every day is a bonus" on the back - a good reminder for those who happen to have some free time to go bowling today, or to do anything else, to pause for a moment and thank a veteran.

Weston says there is plenty of room for more bowlers for those interested. If you are 50 or older and would like to sign up, call the Classic Lanes bowling alley at (414) 282-6400.
