All About Books: Teaser Tuesday - Linger

With the weather being how it has been, I am so very, very thankful for air conditioning. I am not a hot weather kind of gal, so sitting in a cool environment and delving into books is perfect for me! And right now I'm deeply involved in the writings of Maggie Stiefvater.

The first book I read by her was Shiver. I had picked it up at a Scholastic book fair a few months back and cracked it open while on my recent staycation. "Shiver" is a story about Grace and Sam - two unlikely lovers. Unlikely because Sam is, well, Sam's a wolf. Their first meeting came when Grace was a child and she had been snatched off her tire swing by wolves. Frozen with cold and fear, Grace didn't fight back, but rather she looked into the eyes of wolf-Sam, who pulled her away from the others, shifted to human form and delivered her back to her home. The pair are connected thereafter.

After a teenager is attacked by the wolves, hunters take to the woods to kill the animals and Sam is wounded. Now back as a human, he waits for Grace, bleeding on her back deck. Their attraction is still there - strong and instantaneous. But how can they be together when one of them is human and the other is lupine? Together they set out to find a way to keep Sam human and keep themselves together.

In Linger, Sam and Grace's story continues. Spoiler Alert: Sam is now human for good, but Grace's parents - who have been wholely absent in her life for the majority of her teen years - now step in challenge their relationship. And there's more going on with Grace; she's sick . . . in a way that no one saw coming. (Okay, well, I saw it coming, but I'm intuitive like that!)

So, my strategically selected Teaser quote for this week comes from the beginning of "Linger:"

"This is the story of a boy who used to be a wolf and a girl who was just becoming one.  ...  I never knew there were so many different ways to say good-bye."

Because I have a strong suspicion that this book is going to break my heart and/or make me cry, I made a point of visiting my local Barnes & Noble last night to pick up the final book in the trilogy, Forever. I get so wrapped up in the stories and books that I need to have a resolution - preferably a satisfying one - or I'll drive myself crazy by planting my mind firmly in the characters' world and relieving the story over and over again. (Yes, I know. A wee bit crazy.)

At any rate, that's what I'm reading! What's your Tuesday tease?

Teaser Tuesday Rules:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

"Inside of a minute we were seated on the old weatherbeaten Kennedy rockers that ran the length of my front porch. There was a Pawley's Island hammock to the far corner, positioned there to catch the crosscurrents of air when the weather was stifling."
From Dorothea Benton Frank's latest book, "Porch Lights." How I love her "summer reads" - you feel as if you are there in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Hi Jenna. I've read all three based on your recommendation and I think they're pretty good. I've got a new Kindle that I'm using too much and I wonder if you have more suggestions of authors or books that fall within the sci-fi/fantasy or basically non-standard realms?

I would like to share a trilogy that captured my full attention. It's called the Newsflesh Trilogy by Mira Grant and includes the books Feed, Deadline and Blackout. Yes, it's got zombies in it but they're not the true focus; a couple of bloggers and their trials in the post-zombie world are the focus. The books surprised me and I'll be reading them more than once.

Hi Nancy,

I'm glad you enjoyed them! I've really been enchanted by Maggie Stiefvater. I'm currently reading "Ballad." It's the second in another series of hers - the first was "Lament." As for other authors in the sci-fi/fantasy/non-standard, I'd recommend Beth Revis - start with "Across the Universe." "Overseas" by Beatriz Williams, "A Discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness (the second book, "Shadow of Night" is out on the 10th and Deborah Harkness will be at the Mayfair Barnes & Noble on July 24th). "World War Z" was interesting - an account of the zombie war. I also really enjoy anything by Sarah Addison Allen - her books all have a touch of magic to them. Her first is "Garden Secrets."

And thank you for the Newsflesh recommendation - I"ll check it out. :) And, thank you for reading my blog!!!!!
