Wisconsin's Paul Ryan is Romney's VP Pick

Republican say selection of Janesville congressman is a bold move.

It’s as good as official: Wisconsin’s Paul Ryan will be Mitt Romney’s running mate, the Romney campaign announced early Saturday.

National news sites broke the news just before midnight on Friday night, ending weeks of speculation and propelling Wisconsin into the heart of the presidential campaign.

Shortly before midnight, CNN was reporting that three sources had confirmed that the Janesville congressman, 42, was the VP pick of the Republican Romney. News that Romney’s campaign was announcing its VP selection on Saturday in Virginia broke widely late Friday.

Romney is to make the announcement early Saturday morning in Virginia, kicking off a four-state tour in his bid to unseat incumbent Barack Obama.

The Huffington Post summed it up with one big red headline that trumpeted that the pick was  “RYAN”.  Even before 1 a.m., the story had generated more than 9,000 comments. By 2 a.m. Saturday, the website romneyryan.com, paid for and authorized by Romney for president, was already up and active and NBC and other news sites were also reporting the pick was Ryan.

Speculation that the pick would be Wisconsin Republican Rep. Ryan swirled on social media and national news sites as clues piled up. For example, it was reported by conservative site "National Review" that a plane that might be a Romney charter was spotted in Janesville and many media sites stated that Romney would be announcing his vice presidential choice in front of the U.S.S. Wisconsin.

Ryan attended the Sikh visitation services in Oak Creek, Wis., earlier Friday, viewing the bodies of the deceased with Mitt Romney’s son, Tagg. Tagg Romney tweeted about accompanying Ryan to the visitation later Friday. Tagg Romney wrote on Twitter Friday: “In Milwaukee today along w #RepPaulRyanand #GovWalker to represent my family and offer condolences to the Sikh community.”

Various news outlets also reported that other top candidates – such as Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty – were out. The New York Times was more cautious, still reporting early Saturday only that “a confidant of Mr. Ryan’s confirmed early Saturday that aides believed Mr. Romney had settled on the Wisconsin congressman to join the Republican ticket, but all advisers had been sworn to secrecy. Three senior Republican officials said that they, too, believed that Mr. Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, had emerged as the top choice.”  Fox News also at 1 a.m. was still saying it could not independently confirm the pick.

The Washington Post already had a graphic on its site entitled, '5 things you didn’t know about Paul Ryan' by early Saturday. They included, “Ryan is from Janesville, Wis., where in 1884 his great-grandfather started a family construction firm, which is still run by his cousins today.” Another factoid: Ryan drove the Oscar Mayer weinermobile in college. Ryan’s first political job was with Jack Kemp in 1991 at a conservative organization.

By midnight, national cable news media was reporting the Ryan choice as a fact, and soon local news media was too. Ryan’s facebook page bio says he is a fifth generation resident of Janesville.  He is chairman of the House Budget Committee. He is married to Janna; the couple has three children. Pundits on cable news debated the Ryan pick, including Ryan's controversial proposals on Medicare.

CNN: “Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is Mitt Romney’s running mate pick, three Republican sources told CNN.”

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “Several national news outlets, including The Associated Press reported late Friday night that Mitt Romney has chosen 42-year-old Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) as his running mate.” In addition, the paper's Facebook page indicated that they were reworking their front page in anticipation of the news.

I have activated and prorated your EBT card Mr. Obama. I hate to see you starve and loose any less beers in your diet come January. I have also activated and overridden it's tobacco expense capabilities. It's only fair. Please enjoy a few extra puffs on me. I didn't build my business government did and I owe it back to you. In exchange please enjoy every puff while Mr. Two First names accurately proves your entire lifetime a lie.

Nothing like sneaking news like this in on a Saturday. This whole thing smells of desperation. For the first time, Ryan has serious competition in the First, and the right realizes that their darling is in trouble. So they have forced Ryan on the hapless Romney campaign.

According to Nate Silver, Ryan will have no effect on Wisconsin. The effect he will have is that now Ryan's dangerous retread of old ideas budget will be brought into the light.

Bring it!

You were so dead on about the Walker recall election that I'm sure you're also right about everything you've asserted here.

Zerban is a joke - he has no platform of his own. His entire campaign consists of attacking Ryan and parroting Obama. Does that sound like someone else who recently lost in a statewide recall election???

If true, this is a bad move and an indication that nothing was learned from picking Palin for the number 2 spot in 2008.

How so Bob? Ryan is the only guy that Obama fears because he know when Ryan is in the romm, he is not the smartest guy. In 2010, they said running on Ryan's agenda would kill our party, yet there was a Red Tsunami led by the TEA Party who ehose candidates all endorsed Ryan's plan. Romney endorses the plan as fundamental to economic reform. Why not put the architect on the ticket?

Because when it comes to the general, you're going after independents and those in the middle. Nobody on the hard right, or anywhere on the right for that matter, is going to choose Obama over Romney. Keith's right. All this becomes is an opportunity for the Dems to scare the bejesus out of those in the middle who might otherwise vote for Romney. 2010 was about Democrats still being high off the fumes of 2008 and assuming the GOP was DOA. If you think it was about some overwhelming endorsement of the Tea Party agenda, you'll be standing around with your jaw on the floor when the dust settles, just as the Dems were in '10 - thanks to this decision.

And if you're a supporter of the Ryan plan, the guy who's behind it has now effectively been castrated when it comes to boldly defending it because he has to watch everything he says so as not to screw up Romney's chances.

This has a better chance of being '08 than '10 because we've elected to go with the same strategy that, so far, is a 100% loser - controversial, rock-star VP - because we think we have to tweak the ticket in order to make up for a moderate head of the ticket, when the majority of the swing votes prefer a moderate.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong...

Hoffa agrees with McBride - although Hoffa personally approves of the pick, it wasn't necessarily good electoral politics.

Hoffa also wouldn't call Ryan a true Tea Party candidate - the true Tea Partiers feel that Ryan's plan balances way to slowly, preferring the Rand Paul / Mike Lee / Jim DeMint budget, which balances in 5 years, or the Gary Johnson budget, which balances in 2 years or less, to Ryan's proposed budget.

However, the left's denial of economic reality has been effective at convincing many independents and moderates that Ryan is a hard Tea Party guy.

Romney and Ryan's biggest hurdle will be in exposing how both parties have effectively pushed the center towards the left over the last 35 years, which is the only reason that Ryan may appear to be extreme today to the low information, non-thinking voter.

We need to push the center back towards a true center before it's too late and the rest of the world adopts a second reserve currency, which could lead to the economic ruin of our nation.

Lyle, Paul Ryan can still run for his House seat. Biden ran for his Senate seat in 2008. And this is an excellent sign for our party. You guys have nothing and we have the Road Map for America. You have a President that has has not passed a budget in his entire term and couldn't even get 1 vote from his own side, let alone Republicans, and Ryan passed budgets under his leadership in each of the two years he has been in charge of the budget.

The number one issue is the economy and debt, and we have the best team assembled to fix them. Also, Obama is peeing in his pants because he has no brain power to match Ryan, let alone Romney.

I remember when the dems were all giddy about Reagan becoming the nominee and they got clocked in 1980.

Thanks for the reminder Brian. The Democrats need to drive a stake into the monster the GOP has become.

As for fighting the deficit? How? One conservative estimates it will take 23 years to fix the budget under Ryan's budget.

Brain power? The guys is a taker, not a maker. He hasn't spent a day in the private sector unlike his Congressional party. Most people have been casual about looking at the Ryan's Republican retread program. Once the light of a national campaign is on this water carrying for the 1%, they will flee in terror.

@Brian Dey...I am commenting on the fact that I think Romney is responding to his recent weakness in the polls. I believe that Ryan was a bigger asset to your party as the House Budget Committee Chairman. It would appear that Romney's team is looking for a bump in the polls with this announcement. Ryan will definitely solidify the Republican base but I don't think he will excite the uncommitted middle.

Lyle- The selection was made on August 3rd when Romney was even in the polls and in some, leading. I think this decision was based on his popularity amongst the beltway Republicans and the Tea Party, unifying a base that swept the country in 2010.

It is a decision a the failure of the Dems in recent events including the Walker recall. I blieve people are fed up with the mame and blame politics of the Democratic Party. They want politicians that have solutions to the tough problems, not politicians that are blaming each other and slandering each other.

Remember Lyle, most of the country is red, and if the reds show up and are fired up, we win elections. With this choice, WE are fired up!!!

Not only is Romney out-raising Obama by millions, now he has made an executive decision that is in the best interest of the country, not in the best interest of politics. And knowing Ryan as well as I do, he will take on Obama and expose him for the fool he is.

And after hearing your rants, it is apparent that you voted for him purely because he is black.

I, myself didn't vote for him because of his skin color, but because, as is evident by his dubious tenure as President, lacked any experience in leading anything. He was a lazy State Senator in Ill. who abstained from almost all of the votes he was to take. He associated with socialists and was very close to someone who was a radical involved in a bombing that killed people in Madison. Again, nothing about race.

I have and will continue to vote for the best candidate, not on skin color, but qualifications. That is why I supported Alan Keyes in 2000 and other black candidates including helping the David Clarke campaign.

I would suggest you share an apology to the community and to those who you directed these comments. They served no purpose.

And a personal comment.......

You said "You have a President that has has not passed a budget in his entire term". Who is elected to pass budgets? Is it a President or is it Congress? Seems to me you making a comment that the President hasn't passed a budget is said hoping people don't understand that that responsibility goes to Congress. And Congress hasn't done a very good job in the last 4 years because the republican strategy is to do nothing and just blame the other side making it worse for everyone. Say a big enough lie and hope the majority of people will buy in to it. It certainly was not the responsibility of the President to pass a budget. Basics, just basics.

The liberals do this all the time including the most recent add that was proven false by of all people , Wolf Blitzer, that Romney and Bain were responsible for the death of this factory workers death. It stinks when the tables are turned, doesn't it?

As far as the budget, yes, the budget originates in the House of Representatives, initiated by the House Budget leader, which Paul Ryan did both years, and passed on a bi-partisan vote. The Senate refused to vote on the last one. The President put forth budgets because he couldn't get one from the Dem controlled Senate. The budgets that the Prez put forth received zero votes from either the Republicans or Democrats. Once he interjected himself because of his lack of leadership with his own caucus, it is fair to say that he felt he had more of a role than is required; and he failed... Basics, just basics.

When I get an apology for all the smears that KS and others have put out there against me and other Republicans, there will be no apology forthcoming.

HL Mencken liked to talk about how Americans like to be suckered, so if he were alive today he'd be very much admiring Paul Ryan.

Here is a guy who rails against soul sucking entitlements, but it was Social Security that got him and his family through after his father died.

And talk about glass houses? His is on the National Registry, which qualifies him for a 20% tax credit. Rails about government? Unlike his opponent for the First, that has been the only place Ryan has worked.

Worse he has the gutlessness of his running mate. If Ryan's Medicare plan was wonderful, why didn't have the balls not to exempt people over 55 from having to comply with the new standards.

We'll have to see what happens. The press has labelled Ryan as bold, for essentially repackaging the same tired conservative whackoplans that have worked no where, no time. I'll bet we'll be for watching him get his usual tongue bath from the media.
