Wal-Mart Not Opening Till 2013

The new Greendale Wal-Mart will open after January 1, 2013, even though construction is set to finish in November 2012.

The new Wal-Mart under construction on 76th Street will not open until after Jan. 1, 2013.

Greendale Village Manager Todd Michaels said in a phone interview that the latest schedule indicates the construction will be done around Thanksgiving, but that the store will not open till 2013.

The Village of Greendale approved the construction of a less-than-100,000-square-foot Wal-Mart in July 2011, which will include a grocery market that will make up 40% of the store, a pharmacy and two outlots for development by future tenants.

Michaels said he has not heard of any tenants being signed for the two outlots.

Wal-Mart representatives have stressed that this particular store will be a neighborhood store meant to service the community within a 2-mile radius.

The current property where Wal-Mart would be is valued at $4 million. Once development is done the value of the property would go up to about $10 million or more, which would improve the village’s tax base.

A number of residents expressed their opposition to a Wal-Mart during the approval process. Former U.S. Bowling Congress owners, who use to occupy the building, and village officials said it took three years of marketing to find a developer willing to commit to a project on that particular location.

Well, we've been through all of this before. This Walmart was supposed to be a small grocery-type store with a few of Walmart's finest retail items from China. Then the whining about a 400-car parking lot being too small began. Now the Walmart is "under 100,000 square feet (99.99 thousand sf?). So far, driving past, it looks just like every other Walmart box store that will be left a shell when they expand in 5 years. And what happened to Walmart's grave concern that Greendale doesn't have it's own grocery? It now turns out this is 40% grocery.

Another eyesore for S. 76th Street. I live within two miles of it, I won't shop there.

It is not as big as the other Walmarts and will look nice when it's finished. I'm happy that it's going to have some food for the seniors that live in the apts nearby. Some of them don't drive so they can walk there. Bet you will shop there!!!!!!

Not a chance. There is not one piece of "food" that I would buy at WalMart.
