Thompson Calls Baldwin 'Anti-Jewish' for Stance on Iranian Sanctions

Strong words address congresswoman's changing votes on Iranian sanctions, but former governor goes farther in questioning Baldwin's support for the Jewish people.

In a wide-ranging attack on his opponent in the U.S. Senate race, Republican Tommy Thompson on Sunday called Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin "anti-Jewish" and "anti-Israel."

It was far stronger language than Thompson had previously used in charging that Baldwin had repeatedly voted against having the U.S. impose sanctions on Iran before consistently voting for them only since beginning her Senate campaign.

"Tammy Baldwin, her whole record is anti-Israel," Thompson said at a press conference in Wauwatosa. "She voted for the first time for the sanctions three months ago because she knew she was running for the U.S. Senate. That is the lamest excuse I've ever heard.

"She's anti-Israel, she's anti-Jewish and she's trying to now somehow obfuscate her views and her intentions," the former governor added.

The Baldwin campaign was quick to respond that Thompson was off base.

"First, it's flat-out false," said John Kraus, Baldwin's campaign manager. "It's a dishonest and desperate charge."

Pointing out that Baldwin had just spoken Sunday morning at the Jewish Community Center in Whitefish Bay, where Kraus said she was well-received, he said: "I think that shows just how desperate it is."

He also noted that Baldwin had voted for $35 billion in aid to Israel.

Wisconsin Politifact did on Sept. 28 rate Baldwin's voting record on Iranian sanctions a "Full Flop," but the "anti-Jewish" label has not been stuck on her before at this level.

More election news: Thompson's son jokes about sending Obama back to Kenya

Thompson also assailed Baldwin's record overall and in particular on Medicare, which he said under Democratic policy "is going broke in the year 2022 or 2024.

"Tammy Baldwin is standing by, playing her harp...while Rome is burning — and while we are seeing Medicare go bankrupt," he said. "And the worst thing for us to do for the seniors of America, for the seniors of Wisconsin, is to allow Medicare to go broke.

"Because if Medicare goes broke, those individuals that rely upon that safety net are going to end up without Medicare."

Thompson said his plan would allow those now on Medicare to stay on it, while allowing those who turn 55 in 2022 to choose between continuing the current Medicare plan or the federal health insurance plan, "the same program that Congress is on, the same program the president is on."

Kraus responded: "For four years, Thompson was in charge of Medicare, and during those four years, he ran it nine years closer to bankruptcy.

"Meanwhile, he cut sweetheart deals with the drug companies, and when he left that job he cashed in and went to work with a lobbying group in Washington, D.C., cutting deals that would provide huge profits to insurance companies," Kraus said.

"Who better than him to do away with Medicare and Medicaid?" Kraus asked. "Tammy Baldwin voted against that sweetheart deal and has introduced legislation to end it.

"With one vote, she did more to extend Medicare than he did in four years."

@Craig & CowDung...I want to clarity something. The group paying for the ads against Tammy Baldwin is named Emergency Committee for Israel. It is headed up by the neo-con Bill Kystol and funded by ultra right wing supporters of Israel. They are tied closely with BiBi Netanyahu's right wing party supporters. The goal of ECI is to pressure the U.S. to take on military action against Iran and support Israel's domestic and foreign policies. Main stream Jewish organizations do not support this extremist group.

@JRH...As far determining main stream and extremest groups in the Jewish Community is quite simple for Jews. We have our main stream organizations such as AIPAC. AIPAC is supported by the majority of Jews and EIC is not. In addition, if one reads the current debate between Jewish intellectuals, you'd understand the issues. This has everything to do with internal issues within Israel and Netanyahu attempting to hold onto his coalition. Iran is held to be the common enemy of Israel and the U.S. As the game has changed in the mid-east, some are resisting changes to the new conditions on the ground.

@pull my string Keith Best...What in the hell would you know about Jews or Israel? If Tommy said it, it must be true. Tammy's votes against the sanctions had nothing to do with being anti-Israel or anti-Jewish. A couple of years ago she was supporting the revolutionaries in Iran and she thought the sanctions would hurt their movement. Their movement was crushed and now Tammy supports the sanctions. BTW, the sanctions are working and Iran is on the edge of economic collapse.

Emulates Romney’s 47% under the bus ideology. We can expect he will be for Vouchers to feed the Vultures . Imagine had Bush gotten his way and passed his bill for Privatization of S.S. Craig is back to not reading the comments and redundantly repeating questions already answered. Similar to what they claim as their leaders strategies, when it comes to debates. Here is one exhibiting same old mythical right wing propaganda; {Remember when Ryan said; “It took the president two weeks to acknowledge that [the Libya attack] was a terrorist attack.”}
Obama used the word “terrorism” to describe the killing of Americans the very next day at the Rose Garden. “No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for,” Obama said in a Rose Garden statement on September 12. {R} lies once again nothing new here.

Republicans infamous for lies/deceits. They even put their lies out in broad sight figuring that their constituents are significantly uneducated and will never comprehend the errors of their ways.

Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act

In June of 2010 the House voted on the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act. The Act passed 408-8. Tammy Baldwin voted against the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act.

The Republican party was hijacked by the extreme elements, who have been so threatened by a non-white president that they've invented the most absurd stories about him. A "moderate" Republican would have a healthy chance to win this election, but no such thing exists anymore. What's scary is that the re-election of Obama will likely drive the Republican party even further to the extreme, as they conclude that their nominee was "not conservative enough". The country does not need a more extreme Republican party, it needs a strong centrist coalition. Until the "rational" Republicans reclaim their party from the tea bag crowd, popular support for their entire party will come to look more and more like the popular support for the tea party (i.e. less than 20%).

Bert; Republicans have had a growing division within their so called solidarity. The young republicans before the elections were asked for their support. They gave it reluctantly saying that the present political strategy was to far right and will serve to defeat them. Another group Known as the progressive republicans have similar views as the rifts widen. Reminds me of Theodore Roosevelt. Perhaps with a resounding defeat in this election cycle will stimulate the return of the “Grand Old Party” once again. They have been sorely missed ever since Eisenhower retired.

And seriously, the "Medicare insolvent by 2024" charge? Under Romney's plan, it'll be insolvent by 2016 when he undoes the savings that Obama and the Democrats implemented in Obamacare that extended the solvency by eight years. Apparently Thompson thinks that keeping Medicare solvent until 2024 is TOO LONG???

Republicans introducing the “Poison Pill” back in 2003 to Medicare was a crippling blow of $50 Billion loss per year to the elderly. Consider 9 years times $50 Billion = $450 Billion loss, that our elderly are being demanded to pay for. Tommy/Ryan are from the same flock of sheep. Tommy boastfully states he is best suited to destroy Medicare and perhaps invasions S.S as expendable as well. Austerity has and is proven every day with their failures on financial concerns. Europe with their double dip recessions that Obama avoided by using the F.D.R./ Marrimer Eccles economic solutions that saved us from the Great Depression. Obama saved us from a depression and ended the Great Recession in 27 months . Great Depression took13 years!
Now Tommy/ Ryan/Romney promote precisely the same policies of deregulations as what got us into the Great Depression and the Great Recession. Ahh but then that is what conservatives are traditionalist, reluctant to change from status quo of failing polices of austerity.

To the annoyance of the Romney campaign, members of Washington’s reality-based community have a habit of popping up to point out the many deceptions in the campaign’s blue-sky promises of low taxes and instant growth. The latest is the Joint Committee on Taxation, an obscure but well-respected Congressional panel — currently evenly divided between the parties — that helps lawmakers calculate the effect of their tax plans.
Mitt Romney says he can lower tax rates by 20 percent and pay for it by ending deductions. The joint committee’s math makes it clear that that is impossible.
The analysis doesn’t include every possible tax expenditure, leaving out, for example, the tax break employers get for providing health insurance. But because Mr. Romney refuses to raise capital gains taxes and wants to end the estate tax, it is hard to see how he could do much better than 4 percent.... Lie/Deciet
