Southridge's Hallmark Closing (CORRECTION, WILL NOT CLOSE)
Hallmark in Southridge is emptying its shelves with 90% markdowns. This comes after Old Navy also announced that it was closing shop in the mall.
Today Hallmark's shelves were nearly empty with all the remaining items selling at 90 percent off.
The gift store closing comes after Old Navy announced that it was closing on June 25.
These closings come at a time when Southridge is in the process of finishing a $52 million renovation with the help of $16 million TIF district from the village of Greendale. This renovation has brought in new stores like Macy's and H&M.
A number of storefronts have also done interior and exterior renovations. Store include Kohls, Kay Jewelers, Vanity, Wet Seal, Rue 21, Maurice and Buddy Squirrel. Boston Store is undergoing an $8 million interior renovation with the help of a $3 million TIF district.
Patch is waiting for a response from Southridge's representative about Hallmark.
Southridge released the following statement in response to media inquiries to Old Navy's closing:
As part of this transformation, a remerchandising plan is in place to continually bring new stores and restaurants that enhance our retail offerings.
There will continue to be retailer movement and relocations throughout the property as part of the remerchandising plan. We are dedicated to providing our shoppers with a quality shopping experience that includes dynamic retail stores and restaurants.
The renovation will also provide significant updates to the mall’s interior and exterior, new amenities and an overall fresh new shopping environment for the Greendale community and our shoppers.

Sounds like Old Navy and Hallmark don't fit with their "remerchandising plan".

It's still an outdated mall.

Hallmark has been just a "company store" since Barbara's moved out over a rent dispute. Maybe Hallmark can't find someone to franchise it.

I thought TIF grants were stipulated for neighborhood improvement of residential homes. Who made the decision to use it for Southridge renovations?

Wonder what will fill the Old Navy cavern. It's a lot of floor space. As for Hallmark, I wonder if the whole greeting card industry is taking a hit. At the pricey prices for some of those Hallmark cards (several in the $5-7. range), I admit that I purchase less paper cards, and when I do, I buy them at the discount stores.

Other than an occasional Hallmark ornament (on sale or clearance); I don't buy any cards there. I go to the Dollar Tree instead.

It's the Obama economy, plain and simple.

Actually, doug toader, this is the George W. Bush economy. The impact of the Great Recession will last for decades. Stimulus spending began under George W. Bush and continued under Barack Obama. Props to Obama from keeping the economy from crashing. Help from Congress would get the economy recovering faster, but winning is more important than the welfare of their country, apparently.
Oh, how GOP strategists rely on short memories and easily influenced minds.

Because it would be moral and appropriate to blame a president who wasn't in office at the time? Accountability.
