Two Greendale/St. Thomas More wrestlers grappled for the championship at a WIAA regional tournament at Greenfield and Saturday, and seven of the co-op’s competitors survived to see next weekend’s sectional.
Thomas Welch, Greendale/St. Thomas More’s 113-pounder, scored quarterfinal and semifinal pins before getting pinned himself by Muskego’s Austin Quartullo in 3 minutes, 54 seconds, in the championship match.
Welch bounced back, however, to beat Waterford’s Dan McGilvary, 6-2, in the second-place bout.
The top four placewinners at each weight class advanced to the WIAA sectional, to be held at Waukesha West at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16.
Greendale/St. Thomas More’s Jared Rosen (29-6) at 106, Sam Walton (33-8) at 145 and Dustin Donald (29-14) at 160 were all third. Walton made it all the way to the final before losing to Mukwonago’s Joe Mattson, 10-3, in the title match and Muskego’s Brady McFarland, 15-8, in the second-place match.
Ronnie Weber (14-15) at 120, Christopher Jankowski (13-14) at 126 and Cameron Anders (18-17) at 138 were all fourth for the co-op.
