Updated: Panther Pub and Eatery Planned for Village Center
A village native plans to bring a Greendale athletics-themed pub and eatery to the old Associated Bank Building in the Village Center.
A Greendale athletics-themed pub and eatery could open in the Village Center sometime next summer.
Panther Pub and Eatery would be at the old Associated Bank building on Broad Street.
Greendale native and would-be owner Mike Drilling says he’s still in the process of purchasing the building from Associated Bank but everything is looking good. A special request permit has been submitted to the Village of Greendale for exterior and interior renovations.
Drilling says he always envisioned a Panther-themed restaurant. As a Greendale High School graduate and eight-year assistant baseball coach, Drilling wants this restaurant to be a source a fundraising for various Greendale non-profits, especially Greendale High School organizations.
“I like to joke that I’m a capitalist first and a philanthropist second,” Drilling said.
One example of the type of local fundraiser he could see at the Panther Pub would be a promoted night where members of an organization could wait tables at the restaurant for a night, and keep the tips.
“The economy is tough and non-profits are struggling,” Drilling said. “It’s hard to raise money. Football, dance, theater, poms are all near and dear to a lot of people in Greendale.”
Drilling said the menu would be simple with good and consistent food.
This will be Drilling’s first restaurant but says he’s been in business for many years. His background is mostly in property management, car repair, sales and service.
When renovations are complete, Drilling said, the restaurant will take up the whole first level. If Drilling's plan goes through, the existing first-floor tenant would have to move. Other tenants currently rent space on the second floor, and Drilling said he has no immediate plans to end those leases.
The Village Board referred permit application to the Planning Commission.

Keep it good and simple pub food and you might just have yourself a winner here Mr. Drilling. Kudos to you if you can keep the restaurant open with better hours than the rest of the businesses in the village.

OMG! Does the Greendale School District really think this is a good idea? A bar based on the Greendale Panthers? This sounds like a cartoon to me? I hope the board shuts this down now!

Not sure having a bar a stones throw from a school is a good idea. If it wasn't for the location it would sound good.

I'm not quite sure where everyone is getting the word "bar" from?? In the article Drilling clearly uses the word "restaurant". As far as it being a "stones throw" away from a school...Well what is Ricardo's? And the new Bartolotta restaurant, as well? Both a stones throw away!
Mitt Conolly clearly knows nothing about Drilling...if he did he would know he's the furthest thing from a fool.
The Panther Pub & Eatery sounds like a fantastic idea. It will bring new life to the village and help all our local athletics and organizations.
All these negative comments would make sense if it was a bar, but it's not. It's a restaurant. GO DRILLING, GO!!

I agree with you Allison,
It's going to be a pub & grill and no different than Riccardo's or Joey Gerard's. I'm sure it won't be open just to be a bar. What about years ago, there used to be a "tavern" on every corner in some towns. Get real, it's going to be great! And we need competition for the other places like Ferch's that serve food.

This "Pub / Restaurant" is across the street fom the playground of the school and children will be walking home right by it after school. The patrons will be parking in he lot next to the school. Ricardo's does not open until school is out and so it is not an issue. I don't think Bartalotta's will be overserving anyone but who knows.

This is a great idea that will bring business to the Village while representing Greendale and the sports we all love! It will also be nice to have more options for dining out close to home! Very exciting!

This is exactly what the village needs! A restaurant that can cater to high school athletes and students, their families and the rest of the community! Wish it was there when I was a GHS athlete! So very excited about this as is the rest of my family and others I have talked about this with! Can't wait to stop by for a burger, Mr. Drilling!!

What about Ricardo's, Ferchs and the new Bartolotta's restaurant? There is only so much of an audience for this. Plus Who is really going to support a Greendale Panthers place day after day, night after night? Most restaurants fail in the first few years. If this guy wants to invest a small fortune and the Village and public school district says it is ok, who are we to stop him? A fool and their money are parted...

Mr Drilling, As a former resident of Greendale and still continue to support the community think this is a great idea. I for one would like to spend a Sunday afternoon in a establishment that is family oriented and involves the community. I haven't been in a establishment yet where families could go to enjoy a Sunday afternoon Packer game with families and friends. I believe this will give families the opportunity to get acquainted with one another that live in the community. BUT if Greendale doesn't want your money and interest of bring the community together I'm sure Franklin would welcome you with open arms. With the possibility of a sports complex opening at Crystal Ridge and a empty Sentry building across the street, their are lots of possibilities. And I'm sure you would have many people that would follow you. Something to think about.

Mr. Drilling, this is an awesome idea!!!! I have two boys in sports and they are still young but it will be a great place to go with the team after playing a game! We are always looking for that "sports themed" place to go for lunch! As for school kids walking by a bar after school, for one this is a restaurant, and for two having a son at the middle school in sports the boys always leave the school way after 4:00 and they walk by Ricardo"s( which is then open) and this was never a problem, only now they will have somewhere to go and get a burger after practice and watch ESPN sports! Also how great to have a place that will be geared towards fundraising and supporting not only the school sports but the Greendale Band! My family and friends are all for it! I think it will be a family friendly place to enjoy lunch and a football game on a Sunday afternoon too! Go for it Drilling! This is what the Greendale village needs!!!!

"One example of the type of local fundraiser he could see at the Panther Pub would be a promoted night where members of an organization could wait tables at the restaurant for a night, and keep the tips."
This made me chuckle. He will be getting a staff of waiters/waitresses free of charge for the evening and a possible increase in sales, but he won't be kicking in a percentage of the sales towards the fundraiser. Brilliant!
“I like to joke that I’m a capitalist first and a philanthropist second,” Drilling said" Truer words have never been spoken.

This is a totally different concept than everything in the village, I see this being a buffalo wild wings type place. How many restaurants in Greendale can you sit down and watch a Sunday morning Packer game? This is a great idea, fundraising money for the high school is something the other restaurants in the village have turned thier back on.

I think Greendale citizens should be excited about Mr. Drilling's upcoming enterprise. We get a chance to shape a new eatery to reflect our way of life. A great location with lots of space being managed by an energetic and intelligent Greendale devotee...what more could we ask for in a community-minded establishment? I can't wait for opening day!

Mr. Drilling, I think this is a great idea! I have had 2 kids come throught the school district. They have walked by Ricardos when it's been open and Harmony Inn as well, which both serve alcohol. Parents saying this would be bad because it's near the school's is just ridiculous! I can't wait to enjoy a Packer, Badger or Brewer game at your place! I live in the village and everything is so overpriced. This would be a great place to spend my hard earned money. Anyone who thinks any different is just plain dumb!!!

Would those opposed to the idea feel any differently if the name wasn't themed after the Greendale Mascot? Doubt it...Lets face it, its not the Panther theme you are angry about, its the fact that its name includes the word Pub. As mentioned in previous posts, the fact that this Restaurant will serve alcohol, makes it no different than 2 of the other Village Restaurants. A place for friends and family to get together in a casual setting to enjoy some good old American food and catch a game is refreshing and welcome idea in my book. If you have ever been to somewhere similar like BW3's, you would notice that there are local highschool group pictures hanging on the walls. I don't hear the other communities complaining. Its a compliment to have a local business embrace its community and be willing to contribute to its school districts programs!

After growing up in greendale and being a greendale alum me and my wife decided that buying a house in greendale would be in the best interest for our family. Watching restaurants and take out restaurants come in go through out the years I am finally excited about Mr. Drillings proposal, which I think will bring life, family and greendale organizations back into greendale village. Me, my family and friends look forward to supporting and contributing to this establishment. Good luck Mr. Drilling.

Jasper Jones, do you have kids? Have they ever been to eat at AppleBees, Champs, Red Robin, Ricardos, Harmony Inn, BW3's??? They all serve alcohol, so what is the difference? My kids have been to all of these restaurants and it has never been a problem. Please do yourself a favor and "step out of the box" a little!!

Ms. Misto........what does a library have to do with it?? People need to honestly step out of the box. You can go to a restaurant and enjoy dinner/ lunch whatever it may be and not have a drink. Maybe Ms. Misto from your experience, this isn't the case?

So tired of this "step out of the box" phrase. It just means that you can't face the truth and have a responsible attitude. You can call it a "restaurant"..but it's going to be a "bar" that will be open during the same hours that the library (which it is attached to) will be open. Seriously???!!! I'll stay in my box..thanks!

Really all you haters of the idea. Ricardo's and Joey Gerard's are also right by the library and the school. Being on the corner vs two or three spaces down on Broad Street makes absolutely no difference. Mr Drillings idea is to try to benefit the sports and extra curricular groups at the school's by allowing the kids to actually participate in raising money for their own activities that they are involved in. I think this supports a great work ethic and value vs a sense of entitlement that too many people have these days. This could be a great congregating spot for us locals to have a cost affordable meal! Great idea Mr Drilling. I hope you succeed at this in every way possible !

Restaurants are the only businesses that seem to last in Greendale - sad to say. That being said, I think a Greendale Panthers restaurant is an excellent idea. This will be an establishment we can rally for sports, schools, local activities, and who knows what else. My one complaint is that it isn't open already. I'm ready for a burger and some panther pride.
