"This is a day I invented to save the United States," Jimmy Kimmel said during his "Jimmy Kimmel Live" show, referring to the National Unfriend Day for Facebook users that he started in 2010. 

"There are 150 million Facebook users in America alone — which is half the population," he continues in this video clip on TV.com. "And many of these people have hundreds, if not thousands, of what they call friends."

Kimmel then goes on to highlight the useless information found on one particular user's profile, and encourages people to "unfriend" such users on Nov. 17. This year, that day is Saturday.

"Don't pretend to be interested in these people, they're not your friends," he said.

"NUD is the international day when all Facebook users shall protect the sacred nature of friendship by cutting out any 'friend fat' on their pages occupied by people who are not truly their friends," according to a Facebook page for National Unfriend Day. A Facebook event invites people to participate in the "holiday" in 2012. 

But, if you're thinking you'll feel bad unfriending someone — think again. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to remove someone from your newsfeed. Take it from this guy, for example, who went on an unfriending spree after a Facebook "friend" threatened to unfriend him because he disagreed with his lifestyle choices.

Dan Pearce writes in his blog "Single Dad Laughing" about the day he decided to remove 300 "friends" from Facebook: 

"On Saturday I got a horribly long email from someone on Facebook in which he let me know under no uncertain terms that he was disappointed in all of my life decisions and that if I couldn’t change the way I do things, he would be unfriending me on Facebook.

"I started laughing. Out loud.

"And after I wiped the tears out of my eyes, I wrote back, 'I’ll make this easy for you.' I then went to his Facebook page and unfriended him."

He went on to list 35 reasons for unfriending someone, including:

• "People I always wished I was friends with in High School"
• "People I added because I thought they were someone else"
• "Friends whose last 10 or more profile pictures were of animals"
• "Relatives I don't know"
