Midwinter Turns to Spring?

The Village Grandma is thinking about Spring, Greendale teachers and the Greendale Tea Party

Hello again Greendale,

Last week, there were signs of early spring everywhere. Daffodils and tulips were just poking their heads up out of the snow, the shaggy dog that walks by my house every day had his spring haircut, the birds were beginning to nest and one can hear the unmistakable glug-glug of the centipedes drowning in the crawl space due to the spring thaw.

I was driving by the Harmony Inn the Village restaurant today and could hardly believe my eyes.  In the side yard, the Christmas carolers are still grouped around the Yule tree! Presumably they are singing "Danny Boy" in homage to St. Patrick's Day. Or not.

A big thanks to our Greendale teachers who instead of joining the protest opted to stay at their posts and chose to continue to educate students.

Another sign that spring is on the way is Open Market, which I hear the Park and Recreation Department’s schedule is close being decided. I say there’s nothing better than fresh-picked Brussels sprouts. Possibly, a chocolate soufflé but sprouts are a close second.

And, a big hooray to our Greendale High School cheerleaders! I understand they took second place in a national contest! Pretty impressive, don’t you think?

I see it’s time again for some parents to take the first hesitant steps toward Empty Nest Syndrome. Kindergarten registration is taking place this week in Greendale Schools. To me, it is just another group of prospective Reading Buddy dingle-berries and holiday pageant stars. Time marches on.

Sadly, I missed the first meeting of the Greendale Tea Party. Turns out that you need not be an actual Greendale resident to attend and they don’t actually serve tea.  In fact, I heard there is even homework! You must read the Preamble to the Constitution and the First Amendment as well. So, it doesn't sound much like a party either. But, maybe that’s just me.

My friend from North Carolina says that the big kerfuffle in Madison is the top news story there. She said there hasn't been so much Wisconsin coverage since Jeffrey Dahmer. I’m not sure that's a good thing.

Today is busy day for me. First, I must go to a demonstration by the middle school cheerleading squad. I have it on good authority that there is a spectacular up-and-coming cheerleader who, “must be seen to be believed.” Then, the Greendale High School Orchestra is putting on a concert with an equally talented violin virtuoso. I can assure you that the fact that they are both my granddaughters has not colored my opinion in the slightest.

So, will close for now. I have to start preparations for my annual Ides of March soiree.
