The long-awaited Greendale Supercenter Walmart finally opened Wednesday after more than two years of discussion and work.

Village officials, Walmart representatives and shoppers gathered today in celebration of the opening that included a Star-Spangled Banner performance, Martin Luther cheer squad performance, Veterans of Foreign Wars Color Guard, product sampling and giveaways.

The new Supercenter Walmart is 90,000 square feet, it comes inbetween the 154,000-square-foot Greenfield Supercenter on Highway 100 and the 40,000-square-foot West Allis Neighborhood Market.

The new store features family apparel health and beauty aids, electronics, toys, garden items, jewelry, automotive products, home furnishings, hardware, sporting goods, pet supplies and housewares.

The grocery area will include a wide selection of fresh produce, including a variety of organic products. Other features include a bakery, meat and dairy products, dry goods and staples, beverages, a deli, frozen foods, canned and packaged goods, baking items and household supplies.

Walmart has donated about $5,000 in grants to area organization Greendale Police DepartmentGreendale Public Library and Greendale Schools.

The new building was built at the old U.S. Bowling Congress site. Before construction the property was valued at $4 million. Village officials have said that since the site is not a TIF District once development is done the value of the property would go up to $10 million or more, improving the village’s tax base.

Discussions about Walmart started in late 2010. The Village approved the construction in June 2011.

The average wage at Walmart for full-time hourly associates in Wisconsin is approximately $12.54 per hour, according to a press release from Walmart.

Was not impressed with the New Wal-Mart. Went yesterday around 1pm and the greeter didn't even say "Hello" to me. Just asked if I wanted a map. In several different areas of the store you could see small groups of employees chatting with each other, checking their cell phones and obviously not paying attention to the customers. Didn't find anything I thought was exceptionally priced. Will stick with Target and Sendik's. At these 2 places I am always asked if I can be helped, especially Targrt!

Give the employees and the store a break. It just opened. It takes a while for every new entity to find it's own pace. I am sure Target and Sendik's experienced their own opening store horrors as well. You sure you just aren't against Wal-Mart?

Well, I just got back from the new Walmart, and to tell the truth, I was getting annoyed at all the people coming up to me and asking if I needed help. I was beginning to think I had a sign on my back, "Please Help Me " The greeter said goodbye, as well as the kid getting baskets from the parking lot.

Was Target given an opportunity to come to Greendale? I agree, Target and Sendik stand above and beyond in customer service compared to Walmart and PicknSave. Don't be fooled by pricing either, I find many items at Sendik cheaper than PNS!
Weren't we also told by the Village board that two restaurants were going to occupy the land in front of Walmart? Chic-fil-A is a go (I heard May/2013), but GP says the US Cellular Store is building on the other spot. What will replace there current occupancy on 76th and Edgerton?? Another empty store front perhaps?

You might appreciate this about Pick n Save: http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Media/Slideshow/2012/04/13/12-Worst-Supermarkets-in-America.aspx?index=4

And this about Walmart: http://www.thekitchn.com/the-best-and-worst-supermarkets-consumer-reports-168760

We should consider ourselves fortunate that Walmart didn't bribe its way into building in the "underutilized" parking lot in historic downtown Greendale, as it allegedly did in Mexico to build a grocery store in the field next to the ancient pyramids at San Juan Teotihuacan. (Apparently the mayor of this city was suddenly able to, with no savings and a $47,000 salary, "...paid $30,300 in cash for a ranch and spent another $47,700 cash on improvements to the home." I STILL THINK IT'S A BAD LOCATION -76TH IS GETTING TO UNINDATED WITH STORES-NOT A QUIET LITTLE COMMUNITY ANYMORE

Really?

When was the last time 76th St. from Cold Spring to Grange was a quiet little community? I would tend to bet that the traffic from 76th St. has little impact on the actual village of Greendale as the downtown is several blocks east of 76th St. and I doubt the shoopers from that area takes shortcuts through the village. You could ask the village to put gates on the all of the entrances to the community if you are looking to keep people out.

Maybe if Bren would spend more time at the bar instead of trying to raise it she wouldn't be such a crab ass.

I am not a Wal-Mart hater. Simply was not impressed with this new store. As for the small groups of employees that were socializing and checking out their cell phones, this is a management issue that needs to be nipped in the bud immediately!

What southwestern Milwaukee County needs is a Costco to compete with Wal-Mart owned Sam's Club. Costco treats its employees with dignity, pays decent wages and benefits, and donates to Democratic candidates.

Please post some wage comparisons between Sam's Club and Costco.

People have made similar claims about Walmart and Pick n Save, but the actual data didn't support the claim...

That's nice, but I was hoping for something that was more of an objective comparison, not from a site called 'addicted to costco'..

I'm a Costco shopper myself, but doesn't it seem a bit odd for a store to have a 'fan site' like that?

This site offers what I believe to be a pretty fair comparison. The claim seems to be true that Costco does pay better than Sam's Club...

Went there Friday and bought a 42 inch Flatscreen TV for the American Legion Casino Nite next Saturday. I was greeted when I got there by several people and was treated great in the Electronics Department. I was not real fond of the employees with sign doing their imitation of Liberty Tax.

Years back, before I really understood what Walmart was all about, I too bought a tv there. Turned out that brand made a "Walmart" version of the tv, which ended up lasting about 3 years. Hope you have better luck with your stripped-down model.

When comparison shopping, you have to make sure the model numbers are the same, otherwise you could end up with something made cheaper. Almost all of the bix box stores have their own model.
