Greendale School Board Race Heats Up

Spring 2013 election becomes more competitive as six candidates file papers to run for school board.

Six candidates have filed papers to be on the ballot for three positions on the Greendale School Board this spring, according to the school district.

All three incumbents—Thomas Slota, Victoria McCormick and board-appointee Melanie Kuzmanovic—have filed papers seeking election this spring.

Additionally, community members Kathleen Weid Vincent, Katie Mevis and Roger Dalkin have filed papers with the school district indicating their candidacies.

The five-member Greendale School Board will have three open positions on the spring 2013 ballot.

The two candidates with the most votes will serve three-year terms. The candidate coming in third will serve one year, filling the remainder of Jim Schutte’s term on the board, which is due to expire in 2014. Kuzmanovic was appointed by the board to fill Schutte’s position this summer. Dalkin had also applied for that position.

The spring election will be held on Tuesday, April 2. A primary will not be necessary.

Game on. Let each now state their views and explanations of why they are best choice. Current members running - explain how things have gotten to where we are. Challengers, why we should vote for you. Remember the board has a public relations unit on staff at taxpayer expense. We dont' want press releases, we want speeches and their opinions. Can't hide behind the staffers anymore. At least one or two new board members will bring new view and thinking. Dr. Slota has been on the board at least 20 and the other must be close to 18 year. Hope and change.

Why hasn't Patzfahl entered his name for the race?

Thanks for thinking of me, but I am quite involved in my children's education and extracurricular activities in MANY ways. And to be quite honest, I just don't have the time to run right now. I am also taking classes and making a possible career change. Maybe next year, or when I have more time and aren't spreading myself so thin.

Are you running in your community?

I'm not enough of a union puppet to be successful in a run for school board.

I don't recall publishing any blogs concerning the education system in Greendale. Besides, I am not a resident of Greendale.

Will the six office seekers be willing to participate in a town hall meeting sponsored by Greendale Patch? Or would Greendale Patch set up an electronic town hall meeting where we could post questions and each candidate answer them. Like Katie Mevis's facebook page. Does not look like the others have one up yet. Time for the school board to come into the 21st century. Looking for personal contact and views of each of the six. Especially the incumbent's viewpoints. All should be ready to answer the people's questions.

Love the idea of an electronic town hall. I'm also more than willing to meet with anyone who'd like to hear my viewpoints in person. Feel free to post questions on my FB page, and I will answer them. I'm looking into setting up various listening sessions, will post details on my page when I have them.

Mrs. Mevis is willing to be held accountable What do the the 3 public school board members who are asking for the voters support think about this? Will they stay just as quiet as they are on the bullying court decision today?

I think the idea of a Greendale Patch forum or electronic town hall is a super one. What do the people running for office think? If they don't participate, that will say much to Greendale voters and parents.

I'm very willing to meet with the residents of Greendale in a public forum. My Facebook page was launched on December 27th (the day I officially became a candidate.) Here's the link to my page: www.facebook.com/KathleenWiedVincent.Greendale. You can click "like" on my page to receive ongoing posts and updates. I also have a website which is almost ready. I'll be sharing the link to this website when the final touches have been made. I look forward to listening to the voice of our community as well as towards the possibility of working tirelessly to serve all citizens (especially the children) of the Greendale Public School District. I can also be reached by email at: yukonlearn@hotmail.com.

Hi everyone! We'd love to help connect Greendale residents with their school board candidates, and an online forum sounds like a great possibility. We'll work to set something up. If we are able to do it, do you have any suggestions for what might work well (timing, length, format)? - Janine Anderson, Patch Associate Regional Editor

I think a mix of some public meetings, not one debate but perhaps public sessions where each of the people running for office sit at the public library or in one of the schools and answers questions. Video taping and posting the video would be good for those who can't make it to the session. The online forum could be a few questions a week until the spring election day.

PUBLIC listening sessions/debates are the way to go - not an online forum. Too many of Greendale's residents are seniors who do not access the internet. And we all know that people get a little "ugly" online sometimes and 95% of what is posted and read is worthless comments. ~ this one excluded of course!!!
