Gov. Walker: Developing Wisconsin's Workforce

Gov. Scott Walker talks about training programs available for Wisconsin employees.

The state has partnered with the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association to produce and distribute brief radio address from Gov. Scott Walker once a week. Audio files and a written transcript of this radio address can be accessed here and here.

Hi, this is Scott Walker.

For months I’ve heard from employers who want to hire more workers, but who can’t find properly trained individuals.  In response we put together a coalition of Wisconsin’s technical colleges, the Wisconsin Covenant Foundation and private businesses to help this skills gap.

This week the coalition produced tangible results. I visited Moraine Park Technical College in Fond du Lac, where we announced a partnership that will result in job specific training for four area employers.

We announced the creation of two 15-week Manufacturing Skills Academy boot camps; one for machine operation and one for welder training. Upon completion, each participant will receive an Entry Level Welding Certificate or a Computer Numerical Control Machine Operator Certificate. Ultimately these boot camps will result in 108 new jobs for skilled workers.

These training programs were created through a grant from the Wisconsin Workforce Partnership Program, which is privately funded by the Wisconsin Covenant Foundation.

This grant will help bridge the gap between people who want jobs and employers who need skilled workers in the Fond du Lac area.

I look forward to announcing many more employment and workforce successes all across Wisconsin as we continue to pair those seeking work with employers who are looking to hire.

Wow, what a wonderful concept - private business funding public opportunities for people to receive training in the skills that such private employers are looking for!

Who would have thought that it couldn't have been done without taxpayer funds being involved? Oh, that's right - never mind... ;-)

Keep up the GREAT work Governor Walker - Hoffa stands with Walker!

Hoffa, just think how the looney left will spin this when the first success stories come out from this. I'm pretty sure heads will be exploding!

Where's the evidence and guarantee that two weeks of training for a dangerous job will result in "108 new jobs for skilled workers?" Are the 108 jobs for the two-week trainees or for actual skilled workers? Where are these jobs?

None of my questions matter, Gov. Walker. Never mind that your promise of 250,000 jobs by 2014 was just bs to get elected. Keep throwing it down, guys like "James R Hoffa" slurp it up. ; )

@Bren -

Weren't you just lecturing others about reading for detail and comprehending correctly?

Try reading the article again, as Gov Walker clearly states that this program is comprised of "two 15-week Manufacturing Skills Academy boot camps." That's 30 weeks of training total, and not two as you've erroneously asserted.

In regards to your query as to "where are these jobs," perhaps you should start here:

https://jobcenterofwisconsin.com/

There are 39,642+ listings as of today!

And Hoffa's already stated time and again, he never believed in the technical merits of the jobs promise, only in the spirit of such promise. And in regards to such spirit, Walker is batting 100% to date!

Try again ;-)

I give the Governor kudos. Working with industry and educational orgs should be seen as good, regardless of your bent.

The one thing about politics, there will always will be another perspective driven by the motive of opposition. Take what's happening at the national level. Some have diminished or blocked the Presidents stimulus efforts in this area. Sure, all politicians promise more than they deliver. And, we may be temped to say how slow and meager the results can be. But shame on the criticizer. Those working together toward a common public goal like job creation deserve our applause.

It will be interesting to see how this program progresses. This only gets you half way there. Now you need 108 unemployed or under employed people that are interested in investing 15 weeks, of their valuable time and some effort, in their future. The governor may have to sweeten the pot.
My business offers full tuition reimbursement, pay and position advancements for CEUs, but it is still like pulling teeth.

With 108 jobs we will be just 249,892 shy of Gov Walker's goal.

It just ceases amazes me to see how many people here have nothing better to do than cry and whine about Walker when he is attempting to do what he said he wanted to do and that is create jobs. 108 jobs is better than no jobs or is the problem that they are private sector jobs an not government jobs. We have to tart some where, be it 1 job or 1000 jobs.
