The construction of the new Wal-Mart at the old U.S. Bowling Congress site on 76th street has begun.
Wal-Mart representatives have stressed that this particular store will be a neighborhood store meant to service the community within a 2-mile radius.
During the approval process U.S. Bowling Congress owners and village officials said that it took three years of marketing to find a developer willing to commit to a project on that particular location.
The current property where Wal-Mart would be is valued at $4 million. Since the site is not a TIF District once development is done the value of the property would go up to about $10 million or more, which would improve the village’s tax base, according to a press release from the village.

This was supposed to be a "market" Walmart, and now it's only 40%. Not that we needed another grocery store, and we especially didn't need Walmart.

I'm with Bren on this one. We were told "mostly grocery", when did it reduce to 40%? I , for one, do not want to see their inferior merchandise in my village.

Wouldn't it be nice if Badgercare was not abused by Walmart, who rakes in record profits at the expense of Wisconsin tax payers.
For example, Walmart posted profits of $17.8 million in the third quarter of this year, yet manipulates the pay and full/part time status of its employees to make it difficult for them to afford and/or qualify for Walmart health insurance plans.
Below is information culled from the Badgercare website: http://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/badgercareplus/enrollmentdata/enrolldata.htm
It shows that Walmart is AGAIN the No. 1 employer in Wisconsin having employees on Badgercare (i.e., 3,000 plus employees and 9000 plus eligible family members).
Walmart has recently stated that in light of the DECREASE of profits ($17.8 million was 51% less than the previous quarter), it would reduce even further the availability of healthcare to its employees. What a rip-off!

A friend tells me that employees receive BadgerCare forms to fill out at orientation. Walmart is a parasite on America's back. Low paying jobs with challenging working conditions in the U.S., manufacturers forced to outsource work to China to keep their contracts, and exploited workers overseas.

Great for the new Walmart and all the people it will employ. For the taxes Walmart will pay for years and all the income tax the employees will pay, the money the landscapers, lot cleaner, snow plowers, truckers and on and on..That is how it works. And when I go there to shop I may by my gas at the SA or stop at the Mall to spend some money there also....
Got a problem with the Badger Care issue and Walmart? Well take it up with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reed and Mr and Mrs, I want Obama care. This is the intent of Obama care. Hows that Hope and Change working for you now?
Bren, You are absolutely correct, your tone is your right to free speech and I will stand with you there every day........ Happy Festivus to you each and every day.

At one time I too was a Walmart snob. Since then, now living on a fixed income, I've come to appreciate the value Walmart gives me for my buck. Not only that, it's downright convenient for one-stop shopping. And, the merchandise is not all that inferior. Walmarts & similar stores fill a niche. It's not for everyone, I get that. I still shop at the fancier stores now & then but am too busy enjoying the economic gain I get from shopping at a Walmart or similar 'value' stores - like TJ.Maxx, etc. I see no gain in paying more for similar value.
As far as what the workers earn and their compensations.. does anyone know what the average worker earns at any of the stores in Southridge? Just asking...

I'm not a snob, but I do appreciate value for money. After several expensive misadventures with Walmart merchandise, I realized that I was better off spending a few more dollars at the outset to buy items that would last. I also look for items made in the United States first and foremost, which is becoming almost impossible these days because of all the outsourced manufacturing jobs.

I have to agree with Bren and the others. Although this will employee several people and ceat jobs not only associated with Wal-Mart but at what expense. I for one am not a patron of the Wal-Marts or what I like to refer to as the well store of multi cultures. It is bad enough that South Ridge is taking on the North Ridge MO, with the addition to a new wal-Mart it should seal the deal.
We now have conceal carry in this State but the Mall Owners have decided we law abiding citizens are not capable of excerising our 2nd Amendment rights. So we are required to lock our firearms up in the car before entering the mall. So with the yes I understand many of you will say I am racist with this comment but that is farthest from the truth. Locking our firearms up in our cars within the Mall parking lots will open to door to HUGE amounts of crime. Because I am a realist and we all know the wal-Marts of the world attract some quality individuals. After all that is why we have People Of Wal-Mart songs. Sorry just being a realist

Being a realist also let me share my real experience with Walmart. First let's check labels. Walmart has as many if not more made in America items now than simaliar outlets. Part of health insurance factors is that Walmart hires people others do not. The single moms, elders, and low income family heads. All of these catagories are on Badgercare when they come on board and continue till their family reduces or their earnings go up. I have seen many people get a real chance to prove themselves and advance at Walmart. People who had beem working elsewhere for less and no chance for benefits through a company. They are now earning more and can consider company insurance if Obamacare does not force it higher. Most employees in my very informal poll liked working there and wanted more pay only because the overall price of everything has risen not because they felt underpaid. I am not a mall shopper so my using this Walmart will not hurt them but it will take my $$ from the 27th street store. Being on a very limited income the gas savings will be nice and I already use Greendales

Patriot, corporate decisions about store placement are based solely on profit. If profits aren't being made, they leave, with no concern about the devastation/unemployment left in their wake. We've seen many examples of this in Wisconsin over the past few decades. Walmart is no different, leaving empty big box shells all over the U.S. as they leave an area or build even larger structures.
Concerning your comments about firearms, the police department warns continuously about valuables in cars. Personally and for that reason I don't keep anything in my car that I can't live without. I keep a throw in the back seat to cover groceries that don't fit in my trunk, and hope for the best.
I know many people who shop at Walmart because they believe they are getting "bargains." They haven't been personally impacted by Walmart's business practices (yet) and could care less that they are directly contributing to America's economic woes by shopping there. It reminds me of that old expression, "It's a recession when your neighbor loses his job. It's a depression when it happens to you."
Joana Briggs, the facts about Walmart's egregious hiring and employment practices are well documented because of litigation, etc. You do see a few disabled people working at Walmart because the corporation recruits them for big tax breaks. They can afford to pay good wages and provide good benefits but do not. I can't in good conscience shop there.

I hope the Greendale Walmart wont' want the village to build their employees low income housing like they did in New Berlin.
